### Mathematics

• Algebra I (1 credit)
Students will examine operations of real numbers and learn to solve equations and inequalities.Exponents and operations with polynomials will be taught.Students will learn to use equations and inequalities in applications and problem solving situations.In addition, students will work with systems of linear equations and with the operations of rational and irrational numbers.Students will learn techniques of solving quadratic equations.

• Honors Algebra II (1 credit)
Basic concepts of algebra will be reviewed.Students will study complex numbers, systems of linear functions and relations, linear equations and inequalities, graphs on two and three variables, and non-linear equations.In addition, students will study basic properties of matrices and quadratic relations and systems.Logarithms and exponential functions will be introduced.This course moves at a faster pace – utilizing independent study and cooperative teaching with pre-assigned groups.

• Financial Math (1 credit)
This course is designed to focus on mathematical concepts and applications needed for the design and management of personal and business finances.Financial Mathematics serves as a foundation for ALL students to learn to make mathematically sound decisions in their roles as consumers, employees, and/or entrepreneurs.This course extends students’ knowledge of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and percents as well as basic statistics and probability, algebra, geometry, and data analysis in the context of relevant real life problem-solving situations.Emphasis is placed on various mathematical processes which include manual or electronic calculations of payroll, income tax preparations, interest computation, consumer information, managing income, buying insurance, selling and buying, making sound credit and investment decisions and other items that may be related to personal and business transactions.Mathematical and communication skills are reinforced in this course as well as critical thinking skills through applications of math in personal finance and in business.Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course are service learning, field trips, and job shadowing, and internships.Simulations, projects, teamwork, DECA and FBLA leadership activities, meetings, conferences, and competition provide opportunities for application of instructional competencies.

• Geometry (1 credit)
This course begins with an introduction to the most basic of geometric concepts.As the course progresses, students study a complete and balanced course in geometry, including space, coordinate, and transformational geometry.Topics include polygons, congruent triangles, parallel lines, similarity, circles and lines, areas of two-dimensional and volumes of three dimensional objects, and coordinate geometry.

• Honors Geometry (1 credit)
All topics in regular Geometry are covered in greater depth, stressing the use of critical thinking to solve problems.Students are required to do projects during each six weeks to enhance the learning of material.Students are required to prove theorems deductively, establish interrelationships among networks of theorems, and understand the role of postulates, axioms, theorems and proof.

Prerequisites:Algebra I and Meets the Honors Requirements

• Advanced Math (1 credit)
This course is designed to prepare students for a comprehensive calculus course.Practice in the fundamental skills of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry is provided while advanced topics are introduced and practiced.Topics that are covered in the advanced math section include matrices, determinants, arithmetic series, geometric series, conic sections, roots of higher-order polynomial equations, functions, and exponential and logarithmic functions.Topics that are covered in the trigonometry section include solving triangles, areas of triangles and sectors, graphing trigonometry functions, verifying trigonometry identities, and solving trigonometry equations.

• Dual Credit Advanced Math (1 credit)
This course is designed for the advanced and motivated student.Through an agreement with Northwestern State University of Louisiana, students can earn up to six hours of college math credit while earning a high school advanced math credit.In the fall semester, students will be enrolled in Math 1020 (college algebra).Topics will include polynomial functions, linear equations, quadratic equations, higher-level polynomials, and arithmetic and geometric sequences and series.In the spring semester, students will enroll in Math 1090 (Trigonometry).Topics will include solving triangles, areas of triangles and sectors, graphing trigonometry functions, verifying trigonometry identities, and solving trigonometry equations.

Prerequisites:Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Junior or Senior Status, ACT composite score of 18 and ACT math score of 19, (Juniors must score20 on math), TI 83 or above graphing calculator and \$100 tuition per semester for NSU credit. Beginning in Fall 2005 and thereafter, the ACT requirement changes to a composite score of 20 and the ACT math changes to 18 (19 for juniors). This change was implemented by NSU as part of the higher admissions standards set up by the University of Louisiana System.

• Advanced Placement Calculus (1 credit)
The course is an introductory calculus with elementary functions.It is divided into two parts:Differential Calculus in which a function’s derivative is defined as the rate of change in the function’s value as its variables change; and Integral Calculus in which a function’s integral is defined as the sum of the function’s values over a range of variables.The course is primarily concerned with an intuitive understanding of the concepts of calculus rather than with rigor in the formal sense.It is intended for students who have a thorough knowledge of college preparatory mathematics which includes algebra, geometry, trigonometry and analytic geometry.A course requirement is to take the AP exam in May.The cost of the AP exam for students is \$74.00.

Prerequisites:Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, and Advanced Math.Must have no grade lower than a C in the prerequisite subjects.

• Remedial Math
(May receive 2 remedial credits during High School (this is on all types of remedial classes))

This course is designed to strengthen the math skills of students.The following strands are covered throughout the course:number and number relations, algebra, measurement, geometry, data analysis, probability and discrete math, and patterns, relations and functions.Test taking strategies will also be emphasized.

Prerequisites:A score below the 35th percentile on the ITED test in Math, or an unsatisfactory score on the math portion of GEE21.
